Box Fish- delicacy

Posted on September 25, 2010

The name of this strange looking square fish takes after its shape- BOX FISH

I saw this fish when i was in Aquaria, KLCC and it looks adorable to me! 🙂
It does not swim as fast as the other fishes due to it’s big bony structure.

Ostraciidae is a family of squared, bony fish belonging to the order Tetraodontiformes, closely related to the pufferfishes and filefishes. Fish in the family are known variously as boxfishes, cofferfishes, cowfishes and trunkfishes.
Ostraciidae of the Genus Lactophrys also secrete poisons from their skin into the surrounding water, further protecting them from predation.       (source-Wikipedia)

Box fish

:: this could be the white-spotted boxfish::

Unbeknown-st by me it is actually a delicacy only in Makassar, Indonesia.

In Indonesia this fish is known as Ikan Kudu kudu.
According to some people the flesh of the fish is like chicken(?) It’s scales are hexagonal and to get to the flesh of the fish one must use your fingers to pry open this hard-scaled fish to get to it’s tender flesh. Hohoho Such hard work just to eat.

According to Om Alberto, the Boxfish was an inspiration to Mercedes-Benz to design the MB Bionic! hahaa Such creativity huh? Well you can read it more on his site here.

I am shock that such a pretty looking middle latitudes sea fish can be eaten! @.@ After trying live Octopus in Korea, i don’t mind giving this a try!

All the more reasons to go visit Makassar right? heheehe
